Kindred

In my portraits, I don't simply aim to freeze a moment in time. I strive to immerse myself in a world of light and shadow, both in a literal and conceptual sense. Our existence is a rich tapestry of elements, far more complex than a mere interplay of light and shadow. I'm always on the lookout for specific details, be it a unique pose, prop, or feature, that can hint at this intricate world I seek to capture.

In this work, I personify the seven deadly sins and heavenly virtues to explore the concept of one's perception of light and shadow further. Perception as a concept is a fantasy within itself, for we call on our values and perspectives to coalign what we experience in our day-to-day lives to fit our fantasies. This leaves the question of what is accurate: what lies between light and shadow?

So why the sins and virtues? They have been in the back of my mind ever since I was younger and learned Christian teachings, even after I discontinued learning. They are blatant representations of light and shadow, much like Chiaroscuro, so my work merely adapts to my perspective of light and shadow.

It's crucial to understand that I am not merely the subject of these portraits, but also the conductor of the camera. This dual role is significant, creating an intimate space where I am both the creator and the critiqued. It's a space that is intense and vulnerable, allowing for exploration of what lies beyond and between light and shadow, sin and virtue, for one cannot exist without the other.
